Natural gas for B.C. and the Pacific Northwest passes within 3 km of Merritt’s western boundary, Merritt City Council heard Tuesday night during the regular Council meeting.
Enbridge Inc. representatives presented a report on local operations.
This year has seen the company step up system-wide “integrity” investigations on the line, with over 1,000 exploratory digs.
Pipes are being upgraded as population expands closer to the line. Approximately a kilometre of new pipes have gone in near Logan Lake, and a compressor station upgrade is expected in that area by 2021. Closer to Merritt, upgrades are already complete.
Council heard that the cleared area around a compressor station forms a natural fire guard. If a wildfire threatened the station, it would be cut off from the flow of gas.
“There isn’t a safety issue with a wildfire,” Council heard.
